by Nick Tobin

If you take a planned approach Small Business Servers can be upgraded effortlessly without having to touch every computer on the network which will save your business money. A network does not need to be completely redone to replace a Microsoft Server. There are options for small businesses that run on Small Business Server products to run their network.

Even in a slow economy servers and PCs still need to be replaced. RAM and Hard Drives still fail and monitors still fade. The equipment you use to run your business does not seem to care that the money to replace it may be in short supply.

Servers are at the center of all computer networks and when one dies everyone on the network suffers. When one computer on a network fails that user down, when a server fails everyone is down. That is why you need to pay attention to that box that sits in the corner.

Upgrading your businesses server after a failure is always more costly than a planned replacement and it’s not just the information that is important. A dead Server will need to be recovered to get back all the connections it has with the other computers on the network or you will be recuired to redo the network and all its connections from scratch. Recovering the data is actually a simpler procedure.

You need to be aware of what your domain does for you to get an idea of what is required. Either you have to spend time recovering Active Directory or you have to restart from the beginning and spend time connecting each computer on the network to the new Active Directory structure. All recent versions of Microsoft Server products utilize Active Directory to maintain the security between users, workstations and servers and their interaction with each other. Active Directory is a complex structure and is not easily recovered after a hardware malfunction. This difficulty with recovering Active Directory is what increases the cost.

Servers generate a lot of heat and since they are often forgotten in the utility room this increased heat and friction adds to lessen their functional life. All Servers run on hardware that degrades and will fail over time. The most common point of failure is with the Hard Drives. Hard Drives are constantly spinning and with a server running operating 24/7 their clocks are always ticking.

Server Hard Drives should always be configured in some sort implementation of RAID to help safeguard you from data loss in case of a failure. Server Hard Drives should also be designed for use in a server and have a higher MTBF to protect your data. If your server is built with workstation drives or does not have some sort of RAID array you are already in danger.

I advise replacing servers sometime soon after the third year. Servers typically have 3 year warranties and after 3 years, any replacement hardware needed for repairs becomes more difficult to get. After the third year the odds of hardware failing increases substantially.

The time and effort in upgrading your network server can be greatly reduced if it is done before it fails. A properly planned upgrade can be done over a weekend with no downtime to the users.

C-Net Systems has upgrade options that allow a swap of the server without having to ever touch a workstation. Our process allows you to replace a server with a new one and maintain all the previous server settings including Microsoft Exchange settings and mailboxes.

The process we use allows you to upgrade a server without ever having to logon to a client workstation. The typical process is to start the process on a Friday night and finish up sometime on Sunday and when users come in and login Monday morning nothing has changed from their perspective other than noticing a speed increase. All the network shares are the same, the server name is the same and even Microsoft Exchange functions exactly the same as it did before the upgrade.

The process saves time and money by removing the need to change anything on the PCs. The PCs se no change in the server or its settings.

Depending on the licensing of the OS you could also use the same software on the new server and save that expense too. Because of the benefit of not having to train users and not spending the time going to all the PCs you save a huge expense. It is not a requirement to get the latest version to run on the new server and if money is tight it is a viable option to reuse the software to save money.

Saving money by proactively replacing the server and reusing the server software is a great choice if you are cash strapped. Being better informed and having all the options and planning for the upgrade is the best choice and will save lots of money in the long run.

by Amy Nutt

In today’s world, nothing can be more important than name recognition when it comes to selling a product. Newcomers to the marketing realm must be especially wise in this area as they attempt appeal to a buying public and instill confidence in their brand.

Sadly, 60% of new ventures will fail and that failure will be based on bad advertising strategy. Indeed, many missteps can occur in advertising that could tarnish the name of even a well known company. Here are some of the more common ways that utilizing a faulty advertising strategy can doom a company to the point of no return.

Targeting the wrong demographic — although this may not seem possible or even that important, in the realm of marketing, it is everything. Let’s say you make a product that would appeal to 20 something females, but the adverts leans more toward 30-40 something’s. The mixed signal could confuse the masses, and in the end, you could alienate all client bases. This would of course hurt your image, tarnishing it before you even begin a well formed campaign.

Insulting your target demographic – the last thing any company should do is insult the intelligence of their target base. As far as a marketing strategy would go, it is career suicide. How can you insult your audience? By providing false information about the product or by assuming they will not know or understand certain aspects of the product you are selling. By being dishonest, or talking down to your audience, you are telling them you think you are smarter than they are. This works how often?

Beating a Dead Horse – what can begin as a brilliant campaign can grow wearisome if overused. When you develop a marketing strategy, test the waters from time to time to see how well it is doing. Don’t assume that something that worked two years ago will work indefinitely. Keeping your brand innovative, fresh and contemporary will help to preserve its longevity.

Failing to Cultivate Word of Mouth – many companies believe that putting a ton of money into splashy ads or expensive commercials is a surefire way to get people talking, but the old adage that a product sells itself is still tried and true. Put money aside to offer free samples to the buying public. If your product works as advertised, people will talk and your business will grow.

Foregoing test marketing – while you may think you have the best product on the planet, the world may not be ready for it. The videophone comes to mind. Companies that employ a time honored marketing strategy, like developing a raw prototype, or paying consumers to test their products, often do well. In the end, it may be worth the expense, especially if the information helps you tweak the product so it is more to consumer liking.

And remember; don’t throw the kitchen sink at one aspect of advertising. While it may be a good idea to put your name on one side of the super bowl blimp, you could be better served placing your advertising dollars in more than one basket.

By keeping an eye on your advertising strategy and playing it smart, your company will not only make a mark in the business world, it will remain in good standing for years to come.

In order to pass the CCNA 3.0 exam, it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or difficult. It certainly doesn’t need to be expensive. There are numerous guides and aids available for free on the Internet and offline.

Many companies offer powerful audio products to be able to listen to while commuting, exercising, or while working on the job (just don’t tell your boss). The CCNA study guides offer all of the topics covered in the CCNA certification test.

For example, CCNA Training involves the basic of networking. The basic network allows devices to share information together. A hub connects network segments together resulting that they both communicate together. The first thing that has to happen is name resolution. This will occur by ENS, the typical solution, and what is called a host table, that is built on each host, which isn’t very popular. Now that both computers have each others IP address, communication can happen.

Now the IP address is able to communicate with each other, a conversion of the IP address much occur so both computers can reach the same code. This is called resolving the IP address to a MAC address or hardware address. The hardware address is built in by the manufacture. Typically network engineers can override these codes, but they most often they don’t. The information allows both computers to be able to communicate with each other. The hub allows this communication to take place.

CCNA training will be able to train you to understand the dynamic of inter networking components. There are many areas that will be covered in your CCNA training course and each topic builds off the last until you are ready to take the test.

There are tons of sources available to be able to continue your education and be able to certify yourself as a CCNA. The online realm includes many sources that offer audio products and guides, all designed for busy professionals to prepare themselves for the test. In additional, CCNA training shouldn’t be expensive or difficult.

Looking for a reliable hosting solution these days is like looking for needles in a haystack. The confusing thing is you are not sure of what requirements each company has and what could work for you. There are tons of hosting plans but for this article, we will be focusing on the different types of hosting available in the market. There are 3 major types of hosting on the market and the top among these are the shared hosting, dedicated hosting and VMware hosting. VMware hosting is unlike the normal hosting packages where you need a lot of resources such as hardware, operating system et.c.

A VMware hosting package is necessary when you intend to get an in-house server where you can easily manage it and all the data on it. The benefits of VMware hosting are numerous and some of these include:

1. Cheap to manage Unlike dedicated and shared hosting, VMware virtualized hosting does not cost much to set up. The need for an operating system and physical server is virtually eliminated and it often does the job far more effectively considering its convenience.

2. Can be Combined with physical servers Because of its dynamic nature, it can be combined with physical servers, thus making your hosting and data far more reliable than if it were done by just physical servers alone. Because the server is virtualized, there is less clumsiness and more data safety as you are then generating different or a more virtualized network that can be monitored or controlled from one location. This single step can help you save up on costs attached to physical server installation while diverting the amount of time and manpower that could have been used for that into other more productive processes.

3. Data security and assurance Nothing is worse than not being able to access your data at the time you need it. Therefore, using outsourcing your VMware hosting ensures that not only are those data available, in case of server down times, you can quickly back up your data on different servers across different locations thus, securing your data and making it possible for you to have your own data centre accessible by you at any time. This data security therefore ensures that no matter what the condition might be, you have peace of mind concerning your data.

4. Reduced Need for Extra Hardware In situations where you need to install new applications, people who use physical servers often spend a lot of time trying to install on a new server. But with VMware hosting, you do not need all that. You can easily set up and install new applications without worrying about physical servers.

In all, virtualized servers are about the best bargain and cost you far less than you would spend on physical servers. A quick look around will assure you of the veracity of this statement. Therefore, if you really want reliable hosting with failover abilities, then VMware hoisting is the way to go.

Computer viruses can affect the cosmetics of a computer such as the screen and display appearances or the simple functions such as the way the keyboard operates or the functionality of the drives. Some of these symptoms may seem to be only a minor inconvenience, but when you see these signs you should wonder what may have caused the change and what else may be going on that you can’t see. Other symptoms can include loss of files, decrease in memory space, slow operation and damaged programs.

The writer of the virus determines how they will infect the system as well as what they want the virus to do. In most cases, a virus will perform damage to the host system, and may do this while performing another function such as retrieving information, and then spread to the remainder of the network.

A computer virus is similar to a medical virus in that it often occurs even when precautions were taken to prevent it. Particularly malicious viruses steal information and data, which may be confidential. This may be customer or client information of a personal nature whether medical, financial or some other form. It may be company information specific to employee’s records, user names and passwords or other functions of the business. Information may simultaneously be erased. It can pick up information from any other computer in the network. It can locate other users and obtain their information.

There are many programs available and they are a must-have for an individual’s personal computer and certainly for that of a business. Strong measures must be taken to prevent viruses within a company, as one infected computer is opening the door to the entire network, putting clients, customers and even employees at risk. Businesses should understand that the condition of their system is susceptible to change with every employee that signs into the network. Training should be instituted to prevent damage by teaching employees how to determine what is safe use of the system, how to update their protection programs and how to know if something is questionable and when to bring it to the attention of the IT department. It is always helpful to set up the virus protection programs to run automatically and the individual systems or the network as a whole can be set to automatically update the programs that are install along with fixes and patches as needed. In addition to anti-virus removal programs a filter may also help to block viruses.

While the anti-virus is placed inside the firewall, a filter is placed on the outside and closer to the server. Users may be limited as far as what can be received and may not be able to open attachments. This will undoubtedly create an inconvenience, though it is in the best interest of the company and will save money by eliminating loss of business if a shutdown is needed to correct a problem. A virus usually spreads very quickly and for a large company this can be costly. Prevention is always the least costly way to reduce the risk of virus.
